Abstract:

Three letters, the first written July 17, 1863 by Oscar to his mother, Polly Spaulding, still in Lyndon, Vermont, regards life in California and his decision to remain in the Napa Valley. The second written Mar. 2, 1930 by Charlotte to her granddaughter and husband, Etta and Lawrence Saywell of Berkeley, Calif., recounts the family voyage from New York to San Francisco, Calif. as a young girl. The third written Apr. 25, 1932 by Charlotte to Etta describes life in Napa, Calif., along with an incident from her childhood in Oak Creek, Wisc. Also includes a partial handwritten family tree of the Spaulding and Mount families.

Oscar Spaulding and his brother, Alonzo, moved from Lyndon, Vt., to Calif. and settled in the Napa Valley. Charlotte Spaulding moved with her family from Oak Creek, Wisc., to Calif. in May 1853. Oscar and Charlotte married in 1860.
